I Can Has Energy?

No energy today, NONE! Trying to get my butt through at least until Noon here. I might feel better after a short walk in the sunshine. This job is like watching paint dry.

The Dreadful Grey Skies

The drive into work is in the dark. I share the road with a motley crew of drivers who can barely hold the wheel with one hand. The office has a cold chill not from the over-active HVAC, but instead from the nocturnal winds that have ravaged the building since the evening hours. Sitting down in my ergonomically uncomfortable chair I look out my portal to the world at the grey sky. It has finally come to my realization that the autumn season is back.

The past week my energy has been constantly drained. Even the rich scent of Juan Valdez's Obsidian Elixir of Vim cannot counteract the feeling. It goes without saying that the levels of anxiety and irritability are slowly rising.

I dread this time of the year. It disgusts me. I don't think I can do this again. I am not ready for the winter.

The Sims 3 Base Game is Surprisingly Good

So the last week I have been playing The Sims 3. I started it a bit overnight after re-downloading all the patches and Playing my Sims 2 Legacy in the meantime. I got this game a few months ago after purchasing my HP dv7t quad-core. Finally having a graphics card that can play The Sims 2 at with maximum settings as well as being able to play most current games with any decent graphics detail has been a awesome.

Here's what I like about TS3 so far from actually being able to take the time to play it:

It's a Seamless Neighborhood - My Sim can run or taxi all over the neighborhood to communitylots, to work at a "rabbit-hole" or visiting a neighbor (finally!). It's like Sims 1 you were stuck in big square and couldn't leave. Then they had community lots in TS1 and TS2 that your sim could visit, but when they left for work, they simply exited stage left and came back a few hours later.  Now, in TS3, your view NEVER leaves your sims, you can track them all over.

However, that leads to one of the things that was great about community lots. Sure, having time essentially stop for sims at community lots was not realistic, it does give your sim much less time in the day in order to do skilling and meeting potential breeding stock (as I call townies in my Legacy games). You kinda have to be lucky.

Traits - Traits can be good or bad and describe a sim, simillar to the point-buy system of the previous 2 games. You can actually have evil Sims. Or can be lucky, neat, sloppy, Geniuses, and the like. They also help descirbe how well the Sim can learn diffrent skills and how quickly. A sim with the Bookworm trait and the Genius trait will be able to learn logic books at an astounding rate, almost as fast as playing a game of chess.

Vehicles - Included in the base game and you can follow them all around the town, but its almost not worth buying your sim his own vehicle as the taxi is free and comes along almost instantaneously for your Sim.

Graphics Scalability - EAxis seems to try to make The Sims game of all sorts play on most modern computers. As such It seems the amount of options that is selectable in the graphics panel is exciting to me. I was able to get most of the settings to a very good level and be able to play TS3 at the resolution of 1600x900 with mostly a framerate in the 50-60 range. I am not playing on a high end card either. It's just a 320M that HP scrapped off of the floor of Nvidia and threw into my laptop. As such, I could imagine The Sims 3 being able to run on even some older video cards like a 7600 GT

What I am kinda meh about or annoys me:

Time Management - MUCH harder for multiple sims in TS3. If i got a little flustered with controlling multiple sims at a time I would grab one sim and send him downtown to do some tasks or meet up with neighbors. The rest of the house was put in stasis and aging didn't need to exist. When the sim got home, though he would nearly have drained his energy bar and needed to pound down the espresso to get his energy bar back up to where everyone in the house was. Overall though, it made things quite simpler.

Raising skills also seems to be much harder and the Sim has to rely on his traits in order to level them up at a decent rate. That could be a good thing, means that sims will not really be able to be a jack of all trades during his life.

Careers Vs. Pay - Very hard to get promoted from first level usually. Science for instance takes level 4 in the gardening skill and sucking up with the boss. At the final level it requires good relationship with the boss as well as high skills in Gardening, Mechanics and also Fishing. Which is a lot of skills to keep up with, without the right traits. The pay... not great. Business seems to require very few skills and can be exploited for money with the use of meetings many times a day.

Overall it is a nice game with some good improvements over The Sims 2. I will still play a lot of The Sims 2 because just the sheer amount of content that is in the game with all the expansions yarred.

In TS2: Currently My 3rd and 4th generation Drakemore legacy is going strong and already I seem to have broken most of the handicaps that I set forth with, but thats OK because by the time I have a 10th generation, I'll have so many Sims that I'll probably be able to easily populate my whole "still quite empty" base neighborhood. I just haven't added many lots for it and have only house a few of the non-legacy offspring in apartment buildings and age them up with hacks so they will be roughly about the same age (or dead) as the legacy lot. Lots of 2nd gen elder.

TFGIF

The title says it all. I can't take another day of work this week and I didn't even work on Monday. Let's just get down to business.

First. I though we got rid of the Websense garbage. It never worked properly and NEVER blocked spam like it was supposed to do. Now we have zScaler. This one is a cloud-based net filter. Now the security/IT part of me understands the need for a good netfilter in this day in age. but the Chaotic-Neutral pirate in me wants total freedom to not just waste my time, but utterly destroy my time with pointless websites.

Looks like I am setting up the server box again. This time I am going to be using the still quite capable P3-700 laptop. Its got enough memory so I am going to get windows XP setup with a striped down installation on it. Setup some proxy software and im good to go.

On closer inspection It appears that a simple proxy setting client side is directing HTTP traffic to the zScaler proxy servers. Well, that’s easy enough to remedy, but I am still going to get MY proxy set up soon. BLOCK THIS, BITCHES!

Second Issue: If you feel the need to bitch out another employee, PLEASE CLOSE YOUR FUCKING DOOR! Nobody else needs to hear it. I don’t care what he did wrong or not. He is a new employee with only 3 weeks experience. NOT 30 FUCKING YEARS!

Third Issue: It seems there is talk of the hire of another IT person here in our office. Now I got passed up the first time because the first time they never had an internal hiring process before. Second time I got passed up because the position was not yet approved, after I submitted my form, Then when it was approved my boss, which had to sign the paperwork, was on vacation for two weeks. I missed out again!

Will I get the chance this time around? I am well capable of doing this job. Hell, it beats doing spreadsheets all day for the science department. I hope so.

* * * * *

I would really like to relax this weekend. Maybe play The Sims 2 or even 3. Yes, i got it last week, but haven't had the time to play it much. I got 3 for 30 bucks at Target. I may pick up the expansions at a later date and may actually pay for them if they are good.

With me getting dragged around to diffrent events every weekend, I haven't really had any real alone time for months. I think I value my time to be introspective. I dislike having to deal with people more then a few hours  a day.

When I get home, I barely want to deal with my own family. It may be a bit concerning, but that's how I feel anymore. I just have to force myself to spend time with them.

I am still working toward loosing more weight. A few more pounds since last month. I am slowly approaching my goal of 200 flat by the end of the year.

Energy Drain

I have been feeling so drained today. I am very hazy and can’t seem to wake up at all. Five cups of super-strong coffee is not seeming to do it. Here it is almost lunch time and I still feel like I did when I woke up this morning.

I don’t understand why I feel like this in the mornings anymore. It’s horrible. No focus and struggling to stay awake. I am usually like this until at least 12:00 or later.

The New Room

We finished the Room for our little one. Her larger room is in the "catch-all" spare bedroom in our house. Over the past 5 years since we have moved in, it has held all the extra junk (we don't use anymore) that L didn't seem to want to get rid of for one reason or another (I don't understand why we keep all of that crap).

It was going to be a super-sunny hot weekend originally. We planned to go to the spray park. However, when Saturday came, It was pouring rain all day instead. Not wanting to waste the weekend, we decided to finish getting the room together.

Our original plan called for expanding the closet opening out to it's maximum width (to more easily reach all the space in it). Replacing the carpeting. Fresh paint on the walls and a new ceiling fan/light to replace the broken one that has been installed since we moved in.

We ditched the expand the closet opening idea. It saved time and I didn't have to take a crash course in drywall and carpentry. We decided to just get a white paneled, bi-fold closet door that ended up being a perfect match for the ugly brown bi-fold door that was probably hanging on the closet since the mid seventies. We picked a nice nickel finished cabinet knob to compliment the door. The paint color we picked a very light violet for the walls, a perfect color for a child's room. We also picked up the most perfect fan for her room. It is a white fan with multi-colored pastel paddles. Very fun. The carpeting we are going to leave for later, when we have more scratch. We are still debating either new carpeting, hardwood or a well made laminate.

After we gathered all the items we needed at the home improvement store, we ordered some pizza for lunch and got the room ready for the painting. My in-laws came over to help with the painting and got it done in a little over 3 hours while R took a nap (Whew).

After that it was replacing the fan as the next task. You would think that just simply replacing a fan would be easy, but it wasn't. With how half-assed the electrical work is in our house we had all kind of zany situations happening. From the fan not working on the switch, to the switch controlling another room in the house! After a good few hours, we finally got the wiring straightened out and labeled for future reference.

Hanging the closet door was also easy, we used the existing hardware in the floor and just replaced the rail at the top with the new one. Boom.

We shifted the furniture around and she was able to sleep in her fresh new room last night. She has lots of room for more stuff now.

Trying to Refocus

Over the past year I have lost about 85~90 lbs of weight. It is a big accomplishment, thank you. However my goal is another 20 lbs away. This will put me into the 175-180lb range. My goal by the end of the year is to reach that weight. After that my goal will be maintaining that weight.

However, I love cookies and donuts and all the goodies that end up being left at work in the break room. DAMN THEM! And of course I can't really refuse a lonesome cookie that is just begging for a new home.

I haven't had a burger in so long! Really I have not had any red meat in probably about 2 months. I just haven't made it and when we go out to eat I either order chicken or something off of the vegetarian menu because it is typically a lighter choice anyways.

Heck sometimes I don't eat any meat for a few days at a time. I could, with the right diet choices probably eliminate meat from my diet totally.

The Unintentional Vegetarian

I just realized the other day, I haven't had any type of meat for the last few weeks. Almost Three. I just haven't made it for some reason and we have been having lots of veggies and bean meals at home.

I probably could conceivably go without meat for a long time and not really miss it.

It's Me Again

Here I am. A few good months later. A few good pounds lighter (I lost 70lbs since last year about this time). So what's new? Not much. It's a very dry, dry existence being me. Oh, I am sure things have happened, but nothing very noteworthy. Christmas came and went, V-day came and went, some birthdays came and went. Many projects at work have been keeping me busy also. That is probably the biggest thing.

What's Inside a Cup of Coffee?

Posted on Wired.com

Caffeine
This is why the world produces more than 16 billion pounds of coffee beans per year. It's actually an alkaloid plant toxin (like nicotine and cocaine), a bug killer that stimulates us by blocking neuroreceptors for the sleep chemical adenosine. The result: you, awake.

Water
Hot H2O is a super solvent, leaching flavors and oils out of the coffee bean. A good cup of joe is 98.75 percent water and 1.25 percent soluble plant matter. Caffeine is a diuretic, so coffee newbies pee out the water quickly; java junkies build up resistance.

2-Ethylphenol
Creates a tarlike, medicinal odor in your morning wake-up. It's also a component of cockroach alarm pheromones, chemical signals that warn the colony of danger.

Quinic acid
Gives coffee its slightly sour flavor. On the plus side, it's one of the starter chemicals in the formulation of Tamiflu.

3,5 Dicaffeoylquinic acid
When scientists pretreat neurons with this acid in the lab, the cells are significantly (though not completely) protected from free-radical damage. Yup: Coffee is a good source of antioxidants.

Dimethyl disulfide
A product of roasting the green coffee bean, this compound is just at the threshold of detectability in brewed java. Good thing, too, as it's one of the compounds that gives human feces its odor.

Acetylmethylcarbinol
That rich, buttery taste in your daily jolt comes in part from this flammable yellow liquid, which helps give real butter its flavor and is a component of artificial flavoring in microwave popcorn.

Putrescine
Ever wonder what makes spoiled meat so poisonous? Here you go. Ptomaines like putrescine are produced when E. coli bacteria in the meat break down amino acids. Naturally present in coffee beans, it smells, as you might guess from the name, like Satan's outhouse.

Trigonelline
Chemically, it's a molecule of niacin with a methyl group attached. It breaks down into pyridines, which give coffee its sweet, earthy taste and also prevent the tooth-eating bacterium Streptococcus mutans from attaching to your teeth. Coffee fights the Cavity Creeps.

Niacin
Trigonelline is unstable above 160 degrees F; the methyl group detaches, unleashing the niacin—vitamin B3—into your cup. Two or three espressos can provide half your recommended daily allowance.

Astrology Chart

Here is my version of a chart that Lady Lore did a few weeks back. Fun things to play with. Very unaccurate to me, however.

Rising Sign is in 22 Degrees Gemini
Extremely active by nature, you like to get around, meet people and do different things. Very restless, you just can't seem to stay put. You need to be involved in several projects at once in order to keep your mind stimulated. You like to read books and to write letters and to talk -- constantly. Seemingly ageless, you will always appear to be much younger than you really are. Very adaptable and inquisitive, you are always open to new ideas and experiences. A "jack-of-all-trades", you are lively and versatile. Because of the high nervous tension that you always seem to have, athletic activity would be a good way for you to burn off energy. But be careful of a tendency to experience things only superficially -- try to dig in and absorb things at a deeper level.

Sun is in 06 Degrees Gemini.
You have a quick, bright and agile mind, but an extremely short attention span. You love the external, kaleidoscopic aspects of life, but you tend to avoid (and even fear) deep, close emotional involvements. As such, you seem to enjoy travel and sightseeing and generally being "on-the-go." You get quite listless when things around you become static and dull, but your excitement returns whenever you are stimulated by a new idea. Chatty, inquisitive and quite playful, you enjoy practical jokes and games in general. Your moods change quickly and often -- you are very restless and constantly in motion. You are known for your versatility and adaptability. Your vivaciousness enlivens any social gathering.

Moon is in 27 Degrees Aquarius.
Very freedom-oriented, you must always be able to do what you wish, no matter what. You become stubborn and recalcitrant when others try to force you into a mold. You are a true democrat -- you are not a follower, but you enjoy being with those who are like-minded. You appreciate emotional self-control -- you practice it yourself and you look for it in others. You solve problems, including emotional ones, with your brains and intellect, not your feelings. Try to be tolerant of those who have powerful and obvious emotional responses -- not everyone is as objective, cool, dispassionate and detached as you are.

Mercury is in 18 Degrees Taurus.
A slow and careful thinker, you like to present ideas visually and concretely. Abstractions are quite difficult for you to understand. For you, everything must be practical and useful in order to merit your attention. You are a perfectionist -- you enjoy being skillful enough to handle the dexterity required of fine craftsmanship. Cautious and conservative in your thinking, you are very slow to change your opinions. You are more apt to respond to an appeal to your feelings than to an appeal to logic or reason.

Venus is in 07 Degrees Cancer.
You like to be very close to other people. You need emotional support yourself and are willing to give it to others. When you feel unloved and insecure, you can be very jealous and possessive. You are not interested in casual or superficial relationships -- only deep emotional involvements interest you. Your faithful devotion is one of your greatest gifts, but be careful not to become too dependent on others. Learn to stand on your own two feet and demand your own rights once in a while.

Mars is in 21 Degrees Leo.
You are a very proud person. Strong, bold, courageous and self-possessed, you love to be the one to initiate significant actions. When people expect a lot of you, you respond positively and will work hard in order to maintain their respect. But when your dignity or pride is threatened, you tend to become sarcastic, arrogant and domineering. Try not to take any challenge or resistance that you meet as a personal affront. You are very stubborn about your right to live your life according to your own principles.

Jupiter is in 08 Degrees Cancer.
You must be emotionally secure in order to grow and develop. You are happiest when your family and community support and nourish you and boost your morale. Whether your childhood experiences of love and emotional dependability were positive or negative will set the tone for your emotional growth and stability as an adult. When you feel at ease with yourself, you are able to offer assistance to those who need a helping hand.

Saturn is in 24 Degrees Leo.
Extremely self-reliant, you set very high standards of conduct and decorum for yourself, and you expect others with whom you associate to be that way, too. It is important that you had a strong father figure or role model early in life to mold your life course and direction. When you feel that those around you are unworthy or behaving badly, you withdraw, preferring solitude rather than associating with those who might besmirch your reputation.

Uranus is in 13 Degrees Scorpio.
You, and your peer group, demand to confront life at its deepest and most meaningful levels. Very compulsive and obsessive in your approach to everything, you will avoid anything that is casual or superficial, especially when it comes to relationships. You will seek out and explore new methods of healing as well as different ways to deal with deep-seated emotional problems.

Neptune is in 17 Degrees Sagittarius.
You, and your entire generation, are heavily involved in investigating and idealizing foreign and exotic intellectual systems and religious philosophies. The most extreme ideals will be pursued with gusto. You will be at the forefront of humanitarian attempts to improve the lot of those who are in need of assistance. You will be comfortable with the concept of the "global village."

Pluto is in 14 Degrees Libra.
For your entire generation, this is a time of radical changes in society's attitude toward marriage and interpersonal relationships. There is a general fear and awe at the power inherent in making emotional or contractual commitments -- they will not be entered into lightly.

N. Node is in 03 Degrees Libra.
You find it very difficult to be comfortable being alone -- you would much prefer to be in an environment where many people are working together toward common goals. Your charming and sincere approach to others assures your popularity -- you have the gift of being able to ease tensions just by your mere presence. You're the perfect "team player" willing to sacrifice your own importance so that the group goal can be accomplished. Be careful, however, not to become overly dependent on your interactions with others -- you have personal private needs that should not be neglected.

Five More

Five more lost, and with that I lost a total of around 46 pounds. A significant amount of blubber, that is. I set the new goal on the WiiFit.

Since within the next 6 months it will be colder out and with all the major eating events coming within that time frame, I have decided to set a goal of 20 more pounds within that time. That will carry me to about April. A year since I have started loosing weight. By that time, hopefully the weather will be getting warmer and the days will be back to getting longer. Many walks outside again.

I did manage to get a walk outside today for a short two miles. It was raining during that time too, but since I have been walking that route since May, it is a Very fast walk for me now.

If I keep it up hopefully I will be getting in short jogs during my lunch breaks next year sometime.

What is Forty Pounds?

Good question as I clean out the cat box I look to the side of the container of new litter. 40 pounds of mostly a clay absorbant compound. Coincidentally that is the amount of weight I lost. So i Pick up the still unopened container and carry it up stairs with me to stand on the scale with me.

As I go up the stairs I realize that I was carrying THIS amount of weight around with me the whole time. The extra stress on my body of this not to insignificant amount of weight.

I weight myself on the scale while holding the kitty litter. Low and behold, it's my old weight of back near the beginning of this year.

It makes me thing of how far I have come in such a short amount of time. I don't know If I am going to make the 80lb goal this year, but I know I am well on my way now.

The Day Thus Far

Attempting to fight the sleep as I scroll through this massive XLS file here, correcting irregularities. The rain falls rhythmically on the window-pane inviting me to just shut my eyes for a few minutes. The sound of Marc Antoine's guitar even further sets the mood that this is supposed to be a relaxing day. However, there is too much to be done today and not a moment to loose.

I pick my lighter self up from the chair and get another cupful of "Juan Valdez's Obsidian Elixir of Vitality". I try to think of what way I want to walk today since I may be able to beat the rain again today. The weight-loss has been going very well and I have lost another three pounds in the past week. Yes, I may just reach my end of the year goal of being weighing a healthy 80 pounds less, and even if I don't, I know I will be a significant way there.

The cup of coffee gets finished and I long to have the lunch-hour come, oh yes, I will be walking.

One More Pound

Lost one more pound this week. I ate a lot of extra crap this week that I shouldn't have, but I still lost one pound so that isn't too bad. I also lost out on quite a few walks with the cruddy weather.
